My Learning Journey
I was first inspired to take control of my learning by my middle school social studies teacher Mr. Blevins. At the time I did not realize what being a teacher entailed, but the support and safety I felt in exploring knowledge and ideas stuck with me. In the beginning it was a personal inspiration to learn. I was struck with the desire to know: how things worked, when things happened, and why ideas spread. Knowing new things and knowing more things became important. Eventually, I came to the understanding that knowing was not the end goal because knowing did not create solutions. I needed to know enough to be able to do. And I realized that I wanted to be like Mr. Blevins. I wanted to inspire others around me to learn: what, why, and how.
As a teacher, I’ve worn many curriculum content hats, including middle and high school social studies, as well as middle school math, science, and language arts. After graduating with my doctorate in curriculum and instruction, I found a renewed passion for education in my role as a teacher leader. By focusing on creating safe spaces for students, both for academic challenge and personal security, I re-envisioned what it meant to be a learner in my classroom. My students’ focus shifted from content absorption to exploration and application of concepts, skills, and ideas. The shift brought attention to my classroom and I took the opportunity to share my trips, my failures, my trials, and my students’ successes. By stepping out of the classroom and into the role of learning coach and curriculum leader I discovered that I could positively affect teachers’ practices and through them an even greater number of students.
As an active community member at a young age, I took the opportunity to tour overseas when I was 13. This two week adventure became another inspiration for me that created in me a love of exploration and experiential learning through global travel. Luckily, my wife also shared a love of learning and a desire to explore, which led us to our first international school, then a second, third, fourth, and now fifth. Along the way, we’ve brought two sons into this exciting life, and we are happy to be able to show them by doing what it means to treat life as a learning journey.
Becoming a father had a profound affect on me as an educator. My sons provide me with the inspiration and energy to continue my efforts to support teachers’ professional improvement and to create sustainable systems that foster student learning and personal growth. My family also inspires me to embrace challenge and change, because I have such a solid foundation from which to explore. I am excited for the opportunity to take my growing skill set into a new learning and teaching environment where I can both help others and learn from the many wonderful people I meet during this life’s adventure.
